As an art history graduate turned interior designer, I’ve always prioritized the placement of art in my clients’ homes (and my own.) It’s impossible to express the impact that the “just right” piece can have on a room’s success – let’s just say it’s hugely significant.
Choosing the right piece for your room depends on several factors: budget, combinations, personal preferences, and space.
Budget:
There is a common misconception that art is always expensive. In reality, artwork is available in a wide variety of price points. Original art pricing varies widely based on how prolific the artist is. Galleries generally demand higher prices for their artist, but don’t rule those out right away. Gallery shopping can be informative and often a springboard to help you narrow down what you like. Antique and vintage stores often sell original art (usually already framed!) at a much lower price-point. If you like it, mix it in! Giclees, or reproduction art, is another way to furnish your walls on a budget. Many art sources screenprint the image onto a canvas and then enhance the canvas by hand, which lends to a painted feel on a piece that is a fraction of the cost of an original. Finally, don’t forget photography! Often photography is available at great prices and can add a nice counterbalance to other types of art within a room.
Combinations:
As mentioned above, photography can be a counterbalance to other types of art within a room. As a designer, I like to achieve a well-rounded feeling in a room by using a variety of media types within a single space. For example, an original oil painting, a framed photograph, and a grouping of prints is a strong combo that will keep your eye interested as you scan the room. If you can add in something sculptural or even a framed object or textile, that’s a great bonus!
Personal Preference:
Within a household, there are several opinions to consider – and sometimes it can be hard to come to an agreement on art. We all perceive and enjoy color and composition differently. Most people describe art pieces they are drawn to as “speaking to them.” Art should make you feel something, and hopefully all parties feel the same.
Space:
An interior designer can help guide you when choosing artwork for your space. They can advise on sizing, portrait or landscape orientation, overall dimensions, and how to choose the right framing to complement all pieces within your space. Art is an investment and is something that should be collected over time. By working with a designer, you’ll be sure to capitalize on a beautiful finished artscape.
