Whenever I think, “What’s missing in this room?”,the solution is usually something green; something alive. Every room needs some plant life to add visual interest and natural texture that complement your interiors.
This can be a scary proposition for those of us with less-than-green thumbs. With some direction on light levels and watering needs, even the most novice plant owners can succeed in bringing greenery into their home. At your local nursery, take note of the helpful tags on each plant – and talk to the experts in the indoor plant section. Plants, like all life forms, have specific needs and will thrive in the right conditions. Here are some of the more popular low-maintenance plants that can give you the added green touch your space needs.
Pothos is hands-down one of the easiest plants to maintain, and is available in a variety of leaf colors. This plant trails, but it can be cut back easily for a more maintained look. Philodendron is a similar trailing plant with a more glossy heart-shaped leaf. Both are great for low-light conditions.
ZZ plants are sturdy, dark green, and glossy – a beautiful option for when you need some added height. Corn or snake plants are another hardy, low-maintenance plant option. One lived on my desk for a year with very limited light and sporadic watering. These are slow-growing, but can add vertical interest to any space. As a bonus, they are one of the best for improving your indoor air quality. Both options are great for low-light conditions, and especially great for those of us who struggle to water consistently.
Norfolk pines are available in miniature and large varieties. They have a beautiful feathery needle, fluffy shape, and show off a pretty spruce color.
Bird’s nest ferns are a favorite for their interesting fronds – just be sure not to water down the center of the plant as the “babies” grow from the center and can drown if watered directly. These options are great for spaces that get a lot of indirect, bright sunlight.
When in doubt, add a plant! Your room will thank you!
