When designing a room and choosing textiles, I make sure I pick a range of different materials to keep the room interesting. If you want to design a neutral room, choosing different textures and materials can keep the room from being too boring even if you are mostly picking neutral fabrics. I also make sure that there is some contrast whether that is in the ottoman fabric or pillows so that the room doesn’t feel “blah”. In most design plans, I like to choose a neutral sofa fabric maybe with a tiny bit of texture. And then with lounge chairs, I will usually pick something with either a little more color or pattern to break up all of the upholstery. If a client chooses an ottoman over a coffee table, that is a good area to add in some leather or velvet to add some textural interest so that the whole room doesn’t feel flat. Then with accent ottomans and pillows, this is where I like to add in fun patterns and more “trendy” materials since these can be swapped out easily if you want to change the feel of the room down the road.
